About the Port Oneida Run Half Marathon
The Port Oneida Run is the only race routed through the Port Oneida Rural Historic District inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, a preserved landscape of 1800s farms and barns near Lake Michigan. It doubles as the main fundraiser for Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear, the nonprofit that helps maintain the district.
Course
Surfaces change constantly: dirt and grass trails, gravel paths, and stretches of pavement. The profile is flat early, then climbs hard on the way up past Pyramid Point before dropping to Bohemian Road and flattening out again. Trail-tolerant shoes and effort-based pacing help more than a road PR plan.
Race-day weather
Northern Michigan in early August usually starts in the 60s with lake air keeping things tolerable, but open pasture sections get full sun. Humidity can make the big mid-race climb feel harder than the elevation chart suggests.
