Quick facts
- Trail half on groomed forest singletrack rather than road, with rolling but manageable hills.
- Late 11 a.m. start, unusual for a November race and built around Thanksgiving travel.
- Separate ruck division, plus a 7.5 mile option on the same trail system.
- Fields have run near 200 to 240 half marathon finishers in recent years.
Course
Well marked forest and lakeshore singletrack at Proud Lake Recreation Area, with rolling hills and generally smooth footing. It is approachable by trail standards, though wet leaves and freeze thaw ruts can make the middle miles slower than the profile looks. Parking sits next to the start at the Modern Campground.
Race-day weather
Late November here means cold air and short daylight, often in the 30s. The 11 a.m. start buys a few degrees, but a dusting of snow or a hard frost on the trail is normal.
About the Black Toenail Friday Half Marathon
Trivium Racing has held this the day after Thanksgiving since 2016, and it has grown into a season closer for the Michigan trail crowd. Fields have climbed toward 240 half marathon finishers, which is large for a late fall trail race in this region.
