Course
The course starts on the ring road around the iias Tsukuba shopping center and finishes at Tsukuba City Hall, which doubles as the main venue. It is certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations. Start blocks are seeded by each runner's best certified time from the past three years, and waves leave between 8:50 and 9:10. Cutoff checkpoints along the route close on a set schedule. Kenkyu-gakuen Station on the Tsukuba Express is a seven-minute walk from City Hall.
Race-day weather
Late November in southern Ibaraki tends to bring cool mornings that suit steady running. Rain is possible, so pack something waterproof for the wait in your start block.
About the Tsukuba Marathon
The race began in 1981 as the Tsukuba Gakuen Marathon, before Tsukuba had even become a city, and later grew past 18,000 entrants. The city, the University of Tsukuba, the Ibaraki athletics association and the Yomiuri Shimbun organize it together. It is a partner race for RUN as ONE, the Tokyo Marathon's general-entry program, and the men's course record of 2:14:19 dates from 2019, while the women's mark of 2:36:53 has stood since 1995.
