About the Mulberry Island Half Marathon
Fort Eustis Fitness Centers has kept this race going for more than four decades, which makes it the longest running event on the installation. It doubles as a scoring round in the Peninsula Track Club Grand Prix, so the front of the field is usually Hampton Roads club runners chasing series points rather than travelers. Recent editions have drawn a little over a hundred half marathon finishers.
Course
The route follows base roads across Mulberry Island, including Mulberry Island Road, past tidal marsh along the James River and Tidewater landmarks such as the Matthew Jones House. It is flat and quiet, with almost no spectators once the field spreads out. The start and the awards both happen at Anderson Field House.
Race-day weather
Early September in Tidewater Virginia is warm and humid, and a 7:00 start does not fully get out in front of it. Expect low 70s at the gun with dew points high enough that a flat profile still costs more than the splits suggest.
