Star City Half Marathon

Virginia Amateur Sports has kept this race on the late season calendar long enough that it is now the oldest half marathon in the Roanoke Valley. It closes the Roanoke Valley Triple Crown behind the Blue Ridge Half and Race 13.1 Roanoke, and it draws a regional field rather than a destination one. Runners come for a timed 13.1 with no lottery, no travel weekend, and a start line ten minutes from downtown.

The route is an out and back on the Roanoke River Greenway, starting and finishing at River's Edge Park North and turning around near Fallon Park. The surface is paved path rather than closed road, so it runs smooth but narrow through the opening miles while the half and 10K fields are still stacked together. It is not pancake flat. Short rises and a few underpasses interrupt the rhythm, and the return leg tends to expose anyone who pushed the outbound half. Course support comes down on a 15 minute per mile pace.

Late November in southwest Virginia usually means a cold start somewhere in the 30s and a finish in the 40s to low 50s. The greenway sits low along the river, so the early miles can feel damp and shaded until the sun clears the ridges. Gloves and a throwaway layer are the normal call.
