Quick facts
- Rolling road course through Newington farmland with Great Bay estuary views.
- Start and finish sit in Greenland, a short drive from Portsmouth.
- Chip timed, with a margarita or beer for finishers 21 and over.
- Unusually large field for a young race, with a 5K sharing the start line.
Course
From the Greenland start the half heads toward Newington, past estuary views, old stone walls, farmland, and the edge of the Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge, then works back to Greenland to finish. The roads roll continuously. Runners who show up expecting flat seacoast racing tend to pay for it over the closing miles.
Race-day weather
Mid May on the seacoast usually starts in the 40s or 50s and warms steadily through the morning. The open farm road sections offer little shade once the sun is up, and a breeze off Great Bay can cut across the exposed stretches.
About the Margarita Half Marathon
This spring half starts a few minutes inland from Portsmouth and spends most of its miles on quiet farm roads around the Great Bay estuary. It pulled a full-sized field straight out of the gate, which is unusual for a young race, and the finish-line party is a genuine part of why people sign up rather than a bolt-on.
