Quick facts

  • A roulette spin assigns one of three different loops before each circuit.
  • Loop lengths range from 1.9 to 3.6 miles on trail and cross-country terrain.
  • Only complete loops count when the 24-hour clock expires.
  • The 12-hour and 6-hour competitions are separately scored siblings.

About the Cactus Roulette Endurance Event 24 Hour

Cactus Roulette adds uncertainty to the usual timed-race rhythm. Before each circuit, runners spin for one of three loops and return to the same supported base camp. The 24-hour race is scored separately from two 12-hour blocks and a 6-hour race held on the same weekend.

Course

Three counter-clockwise loops range from 1.9 to 3.6 miles. The longest uses technical trail, another follows rolling cactus-ridge trail, and the shortest crosses open ground with two steep climbs. Only completed loops count before the 24-hour cutoff, so the wheel can change both distance and terrain late in the race.

Race-day weather

Kansas winter conditions can move between cold, wind, frozen ground and mud. Base-camp heaters help between loops, and the organizer keeps an alternate route available when thawed trails would be unsafe or damaged.
