About the Brazen New Year's Day Half Marathon
Brazen Racing opens the year at Lake Chabot Regional Park with a trail half, 10K, and 5K, and many regulars run both this race and Brazen's New Year's Eve event to earn the two-race Mega Medal. It is an East Bay tradition with the series' usual well-stocked aid stations and finish-line food.
Course
The route leaves the Lake Chabot marina on pavement, spends most of its distance on dirt trails in the hills above the lake, then returns to paved path near the finish. It measures about 13.2 miles with roughly 2,100 feet of climbing, and the rollers push plenty of strong runners into occasional hiking.
Race-day weather
January 1 in the East Bay hills usually means 40s at the start, and recent rain can leave the dirt sections muddy and slick. Cool air helps on the climbs, but shoes with some grip are the smarter choice.
