Twin Lights Half Marathon

Gloucester sits at the outer end of Cape Ann, and this spring half spends its miles on the ocean side of it. The race is one stop on a North Shore half marathon series that moves between coastal Massachusetts towns through the year, and the field skews regional, with runners who come back for the shoreline miles rather than for a fast time.

The start and finish sit at Good Harbor Beach on Thatcher Road, and the seashore stays in view for most of the 13.1 miles. The terrain rolls instead of climbing, so the harder variable is exposure: long open stretches along the shore leave little shelter when the wind is up. The distance is USATF certified, and the course window runs about three hours.

Early May on Cape Ann is usually cool, with an onshore breeze off the Atlantic. Mornings can start raw enough that runners overdress, then warm quickly once the sun clears the water. Wind on the exposed shore sections matters more to pacing than heat does.
