TMC A-Mountain Half Marathon

Southern Arizona Roadrunners runs this one out of the Mercado district on the west side of downtown Tucson, and it is the only road half the city produces itself. It counts toward the local Grand Prix and the Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown, so a good share of the field is chasing series points rather than a one-off race. A 4-miler and a family mile share the morning.

The route goes up and around Sentinel Peak, the volcanic hill above downtown that carries the university's whitewashed A, then drops back down for a long out and back on the paved Santa Cruz Riverpath. Nearly all the climbing sits in the first few miles, which makes the back half quick if the early effort was controlled. Finish is at the base of the mountain by Mercado San Agustin.

Mid-October mornings in Tucson usually start in the 60s under clear desert sky and warm quickly once the sun clears the Rincons. Humidity is low, but sun exposure on the riverpath is near total and the last few miles can feel a lot hotter than the start.
