Three Sisters Marathon
Prize money three deep and entry open into race week set this young Danville marathon apart, run as four laps of one downtown loop by the Dan River.
Quick facts
- Four laps of one downtown loop for the marathon, two for the half.
- Boston-qualifying on USATF course VA26001BDS, net flat overall, with the same Ballou Park climb on every lap.
- Six-hour limit and aid stations every one to two miles.
- Capped at 2,000 entries across all distances, and the marathon has stayed open into race week.
- Cash prizes three deep for men and women, plus a Friday evening 5K along the river.
About the Three Sisters Marathon
The name comes from the three brick smokestacks left standing from the Dan River Mills, which Danville calls the Three Sisters. A local nonprofit, Running for Freedom, runs the weekend, and it is new enough that the marathon field is still counted in the low hundreds while the 5K and half carry most of the numbers. Entries are capped at 2,000 across every distance, which so far has meant the marathon stays open into race week instead of closing months ahead. Prize money goes three deep for men and women, which is unusual for a race this size.
Course
Main Street at Memorial Drive is the start line, and Riverfront Park on the Dan River is the finish. The marathon is four laps of a single loop and the half is two, so a marathoner covers identical ground four times and meets the same aid stations on a fixed rhythm. Each lap works out along the river, climbs toward Ballou Park west of downtown, then drops back into town on Main Street. USATF course VA26001BDS records almost no net drop and a start and finish within a couple of hundred meters of each other, so nothing is handed back overall. That is not the same as flat: the loop the organizers map gains a little over 350 feet, and the marathon takes it on four times. Aid stations come every one to two miles.
Race-day weather
Southside Virginia in mid-September is still summer more often than it is not. Mornings usually begin near 60 and reach the low 80s by early afternoon, and humidity is what actually costs time here, with dew points high enough that sweat stops doing its job somewhere around the third lap. The six-hour limit puts the slowest finishers on Main Street at the hottest hour. The lap format is a small mercy on a warm day, since nobody is ever more than a few miles from the finish area.
