Dismal Swamp Marathon

The Tidewater Striders built this December race for runners chasing fast times before the calendar turns. A 50K, half marathon, and relay share the same flat canal trail that morning, and the marathon field skews toward runners hunting Boston qualifying windows, with an elite comp-entry standard for the fastest.

The marathon covers two out-and-back loops of about 6.5 miles each way on the paved Dismal Swamp Canal Trail. The profile is about as flat as marathon courses get, so the long straightaways and repeated turnarounds put the burden on even pacing rather than terrain.

Early December in coastal Virginia usually brings cold starts in the 30s or 40s and highs in the 50s, often good racing weather. Wind funneling down the open canal corridor can be noticeable on the return legs.
