About the Tear Drop Half Marathon
North Georgia does not have many net-downhill halfs, and runners come to this one for the clock. Entrants park at the finish in Chatsworth and ride shuttles up to a start near 3,000 feet on Fort Mountain. The field sits in the hundreds, and the 10K and 5K share the same descent from lower points on Highway 52.
Course
The opening miles are an out and back on top of the mountain, with real climbing before any of the descent arrives. From there the route gives up more than 2,000 feet over roughly seven miles of 5 to 10 percent grade on Highway 52, then flattens into rolling road for the run into town. Quad damage, not aerobic effort, is what limits most finishers.
Race-day weather
Late April starts near 3,000 feet, so the summit can run several degrees cooler than the finish line in the valley. Mornings are often cool and damp on the mountain and noticeably warmer by the last few miles.
