About the Alexandria Half
The race took over from the Parkway Classic ten-miler, which had run from Mount Vernon since the mid-1980s, and kept the parkway as the centerpiece while moving the start and finish into Old Town. Pacers Running organizes it and the local Boys and Girls Club is the beneficiary.
Course
Runners leave Old Town from Fairfax and Wythe, head south on the George Washington Parkway for about five miles, then turn and come back the same way to a waterfront finish. The parkway rolls more than the Potomac views suggest, and the return leg exposes early pacing mistakes.
Race-day weather
Late April in Northern Virginia is usually comfortable at a 7 a.m. start, often in the 50s with shade over the parkway early. The return leg can warm quickly once the sun is up, and humid years do happen.
