About the Sunset Bay Trail Half Marathon
The South Coast Running Club, a volunteer-run nonprofit, hosts this trail race at Sunset Bay State Park near Charleston, with the local high school cross country team staffing aid stations. Entry fees stay low in club-race fashion, and the field is small enough that the trails never feel crowded.
Course
This is a genuine trail course: steep wooded climbs early, then a mostly flat clifftop section where runners can spot sea lions, offshore rocks, and sometimes whales. Time goals matter less than the hills, and headphones and strollers are not allowed on the narrow trails.
Race-day weather
The south Oregon coast in late August is reliably cool, often in the 50s with marine fog possible at the start. Exposed clifftop sections can be breezy, but heat is almost never the problem here.
