About the Ruth Anderson Memorial Endurance Run
Few ultras let you defer the biggest decision until mid-race. This long-running Lake Merced event scores each runner at either 50K or 50 miles, and the call is made at the 50K mark based on how the day is going. The race honors Ruth Anderson, a pioneer of American women's ultrarunning, and keeps a low-key Bay Area club feel rather than a big-production trail-festival vibe.
Course
The course is a certified 4.5-mile loop around the north end of Lake Merced, mostly flat with roughly 100 feet of elevation change per lap. Most of the loop is paved path with a groomed dirt shoulder, so road and trail shoes both work. A full aid station sits at race headquarters each lap, and runners can restock from their own cars, which makes fueling logistics unusually simple for a long day.
Race-day weather
October in San Francisco usually means cool, gray mornings in the 50s with fog off the ocean. The marine layer can burn off by midday, and wind across the open lake often picks up for afternoon laps. Heat is rarely the problem here; staying warm between efforts and handling the breeze late in a 50-miler matter more.
