Quick facts

  • Rolling James River and neighborhood route, starting and finishing at the University of Richmond.
  • Field runs above a thousand half marathon finishers, so pacing groups form naturally.
  • 3.5 hour half marathon limit, with a 5K on the same morning.
  • Charity entry is a main path in, through a large partner program.

About the River City Half

Sports Backers built this one as the counterpoint to Richmond's downtown fall racing. It starts on the University of Richmond campus and spends its miles on the river side of the city instead, which gives it a different feel from the November races even though the runners largely overlap. The field is deep enough that most paces find company, and a large charity partner program shapes who shows up.

Course

A rolling loop that crosses and follows the James River, then works through established neighborhoods and past Pony Pasture before returning to campus. The hills are the honest kind, in that every climb gives the descent back, but stacking them in the second half punishes an aggressive opening. The half has a 3.5 hour limit.

Race-day weather

Early March in Richmond swings widely, from near freezing at the start to the low 50s Fahrenheit by late morning. Wind along the exposed river sections is the more reliable variable, and a cold start that warms fast argues for throwaway layers.
