Okie Half Marathon

I:40 Race Service puts this one on with the Muskogee Running Club and Muskogee Parks and Recreation, and it has stayed small on purpose. Recent editions have finished roughly 100 half marathoners, so runners get a certified eastern Oklahoma course and a shot at the state championship title without a big-city corral.

Flat is the selling point, and the organizer measures and certifies the route through USATF. The half starts and finishes inside Hangar 1, the restored hangar at the old Hatbox Field airfield that now serves as the Hatbox Events Center. From there the route uses Muskogee city streets through the Depot District and a short stretch of downtown, passing the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, the Merle Haggard statue at the Civic Center, and the Roxy Theatre. Organizers list five aid stations and five restroom stops, and the half carries a 4 hour 15 minute limit.

Late winter racing in eastern Oklahoma usually means a cold start and a mild finish, with March averages near 63 degrees for the high and 40 degrees for the low. March is also the windiest month here, so open ground around the old airfield can cost more than the flat profile suggests. Rain is possible but not the norm.
