Nantucket Half Marathon

Getting to the start is part of the planning here, since everyone arrives by ferry or plane and the race has sold out well before race week in recent years. The route showcases the Land Bank's Smooth Hummocks Coastal Preserve, a sand plain grassland that most runners will not see anywhere else.

The loop starts and ends at Bartlett's Farm and mixes sandy beach roads, paved bike paths, quiet neighborhood streets, and a few short patches of loose sand. Ocean views are frequent, and the footing changes often enough to keep the effort uneven.

Mid-October on the island tends to be cool at the 8:00 start, often in the 50s. Wind is the real variable: the open coastal sections have nothing to block it, and a headwind stretch can cost more than any hill on the route.
