Mt. Baldhead Challenge Half Marathon

This is a half marathon for runners who want terrain changes rather than a clean road rhythm. Net proceeds support local youth programs, but the course is the draw: the race moves from Oval Beach through dunes and streets before finishing downtown at Coghlin Park.

The point-to-point route mixes about five miles of wooded trail with dunes, paved streets, and the 302 Mt. Baldhead steps. Organizers list roughly 1,050 feet of cumulative climbing. The stairs arrive early enough to affect the rest of the race, and all runners must finish within the three-hour course window.

Early September near Lake Michigan can range from cool and breezy to warm and humid. Shade helps on the wooded sections, while exposed dunes and waterfront roads can feel hotter or windier. Dry sand and damp trail each change footing, so road pace is a poor guide to effort.
