Course
Shuttle buses leave Caribou Highlands Lodge at 7:00 a.m. for the start on Cramer Road, and the race goes off at 8:00. About 98% of the route is technical single-track on the Superior Hiking Trail through the Sawtooth Mountains above Lake Superior, crossing rivers and boreal forest before leaving the trail after the Poplar River to finish behind the lodge on Lutsen Mountain. Expect 4,050 feet of gain and the same of loss. There are three aid stations, the race is cupless, and gels and sports drink are not provided.
Race-day weather
Early fall on the North Shore can bring anything from a chilly, wet morning to a warm afternoon, and conditions by the lake can change during the day. Aid stations have no heated shelter, so carry a rain jacket when the forecast looks unsettled.
About the Moose Mountain Marathon
The marathon is the shortest of the three Superior Fall Trail Race distances, run on the Saturday alongside the 50 mile while the 100 milers are still out on the trail. Added in the early 2000s, it has its own lottery during the event's January entry window and, unlike the 50 and 100 mile, no qualifying standard. A finish earns two UTMB qualifying points, and the race is part of the Upper Midwest Trail Runners series.
