Milwaukee Marathon
Wisconsin's spring marathon sells out, runs the Lake Michigan shoreline and the Oak Leaf Trail, and holds everyone to a five hour course limit.
Quick facts
- Marathon and half both sell out ahead of race week; the 5K usually does not.
- Five hour course limit, driven by the permit window for closing Lincoln Memorial Drive.
- Boston qualifier on USATF course WI25002DM, timed by ChronoTrack.
- Point-to-point on pavement from the Summerfest grounds to Humboldt Park, with an Oak Leaf Trail out and back in the middle.
- Lake Michigan borders the early miles, so a cold onshore wind is the main weather risk.
About the Milwaukee Marathon
This race spent the late 2010s as a cautionary tale. It sent runners a half mile long one year and 25.4 miles the next, wiping out Boston qualifiers in the process, then changed hands and missed several years entirely. Ventures Endurance rebuilt it on a new certified route and moved it to a Saturday in mid-April, and the current version fills: marathon and half have both closed before race week while the Sunday 5K stayed open. For Milwaukee runners it is the spring alternative to the Badgerland Striders' October race, six months apart on much of the same lakefront.
Course
The start is on Harbor Drive by the Summerfest grounds, and the first honest effort arrives at mile two where Lincoln Memorial Drive tips upward at Water Tower Road. East side neighborhoods follow, then the Oak Leaf Trail from roughly mile four out to a turnaround in Glendale. That out and back hides the one nasty piece: a short steep pitch near mile nine that has to be climbed again on the way back around mile ten. Leaving the trail by the Urban Ecology Center takes one more short push, and then miles 16 and 17 hand it all back on a long descent down Lincoln Memorial. The closing six miles cut inland through the Third Ward and Walker's Point to Humboldt Park in Bay View. Paved start to finish.
Race-day weather
Mid-April here is a coin flip. A normal race morning starts in the 30s and warms into the low 50s, which is genuinely quick weather, but Lake Michigan sits directly alongside the first half of the course and an onshore wind can leave the lakefront running noticeably colder than the forecast for downtown. The event has been snowed out before, back when it occupied a late March date. Pack for both versions of spring.
