Lake Hodges Trail Festival 50K

Elevation Culture builds its fall trail festival around Lake Hodges in San Diego's North County, with the 50K as the long option above 25K, 15K, 10K, and 5K races and a next-day trail duathlon. The footing and modest climbing draw a steady share of first-time ultrarunners, and the race has run annually for roughly a decade.

The route follows San Dieguito River Park trails along Lake Hodges on mostly smooth packed dirt, much of it wide enough to pass without leaving the trail. Climbing is light for a trail 50K, and the Raptor Ridge grade does most of the work; the out-and-back layout means you take it on in both directions. Bernardo Mountain sits across the water for much of the day.

Mid-October in inland San Diego often starts with marine-layer cloud in the 50s, then burns off to warm sun by midday. Shade is scarce in the open chaparral, and a Santa Ana day can push temperatures well past comfortable, so plan fluids for heat.
