About the Historic Hillsborough Half Marathon
The Hillsborough Running Club has run this race for nearly a decade as a tour of the town's past. The course passes the Old Orange County Courthouse, the Burwell School, Margaret Lane Cemetery, and the Occoneechee Indian Village site, then ends on the only surviving track from NASCAR's first 1949 season.
Course
The route is paved through roughly mile 10.5, including Churton Street and the River Walk section of the Mountains to Sea Trail, then switches to firm gravel for the lap around Occoneechee Speedway and the run to the finish. The late surface change is worth rehearsing in training shoes you trust on gravel.
Race-day weather
Early October in the North Carolina Piedmont often starts cool and finishes mild. Humidity can linger from summer, but conditions are usually fair for a hard effort.
