About the Battleship Half Marathon
Running since 1998, this is the anchor of Wilmington's fall racing calendar and one of the oldest halves in the South, with well over a thousand finishers most years. The start and finish sit at Water Street Park in the historic riverfront district, across the water from the Battleship North Carolina.
Course
Mostly flat pavement with the bridges doing all the damage. Runners head south on Front Street, take on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, loop the Greenfield Lake greenway, then retrace about a mile and a half back into downtown. The highest bridge climb lands near mile 12, so holding something back matters more here than the elevation total suggests.
Race-day weather
Mid November on the coast is usually cool and damp at the 6:45 start, with temperatures climbing into the 50s or low 60s by the finish. Wind off the Cape Fear can bite on the exposed bridge spans.
