About the Energy City Half Marathon
West Texas does not have many road halves at this scale, which is most of why this one pulls runners in from the Permian Basin and the states around it. The race is run by the Camron Stotts Foundation, named for the founder who was killed by a drunk driver while cycling, and entry fees turn into grants for local charities. The four distances together draw well over a thousand runners.
Course
Start and finish are at Fasken Oil and Ranch on the northwest edge of Midland. The first mile runs on ranch ground before the route drops onto residential streets and heads south toward downtown, loops a neighborhood, retraces Oriole Drive, then works through a second loop and comes back to the ranch. It is flat, wide, and open, with almost no shade once the sun is up.
Race-day weather
Mid October on the Llano Estacado usually means a dry start in the 50s and a quick warm up after sunrise. Humidity is rarely the issue here. Wind across open ground and unfiltered sun on the second half are what cost people time.
