Dizzy Horse, A Winter Backyard Ultra sends runners onto a 4.167-mile yard every hour from the Bonneville County Exhibition Hall and Sandy Downs Park. The race is open-ended and continues until one runner completes a final loop alone.
Winter is a defining feature rather than a backdrop. Snow, ice, wind and uneven ground can alter the same mixed-surface loop from hour to hour, while access to a heated indoor transition area gives runners a valuable but time-limited reset before the next bell.
Course
The 4.167-mile loop combines grass, active and abandoned horse track, dirt road, sand and pavement, with roughly 40 to 80 feet of gain. Snow or ice can cover any of those surfaces in January.
Race-day weather
Idaho Falls in January can bring subfreezing temperatures, snow, ice and strong wind. Heated indoor transition space helps between yards, but runners must be prepared for prolonged winter exposure.
