About the Crazy Desert Trail Race 100K
The San Angelo Road Lizards, a volunteer club that has organized West Texas races since 1982, put on the Crazy Desert Trail Race at San Angelo State Park. The 100K is the long option in a menu that also includes a 50K, marathon, 25K, and half marathon, and entry stays inexpensive for the distance because sponsors carry much of the cost.
Course
Fast, runnable desert singletrack through cactus flats, rocky climbs, and creek-side stretches, in a park that also holds Permian trackways and the state longhorn herd. Aid stations sit every four to five miles, and the 100K's 24-hour limit leaves room to recover from a rough patch.
Race-day weather
Early March in West Texas swings hard between a cold start and a warm afternoon, with dry air and open sun most of the day. Wind across the desert flats can be as taxing as the temperature.
