About the Charlotte Covered Bridge Half Marathon
RaceVermont built this race around a piece of local scenery instead of a downtown, and it has grown into one of the better attended September halfs in the Champlain Valley. Roughly 250 runners finish the long distance most years, a number that has climbed steadily, while a 5K and 10K share the same beach start an hour later.
Course
The course starts and finishes at Shelburne Beach and mixes dirt, gravel, and paved road through farmland heading south toward Charlotte Beach. Half marathoners pass through the Holmes Creek Covered Bridge on the way out and again coming back, with quiet rolling hills between there and the turnaround. There are no real climbs, but the loose gravel sections argue for a shoe with some grip.
Race-day weather
Mid September mornings in the Champlain Valley usually sit in the 40s or low 50s at the 8:00 start and warm slowly through the race. Wind off the lake is the main variable, since the shoreline stretches have little to block it.
