Big Dog's Backyard Ultra
The original backyard ultra alternates global team and individual championships on Laz Lake's Tennessee course, where every hour demands another yard.
Quick facts
- The original backyard course and the sport's championship venue in Bell Buckle.
- Day yards use a hilly trail loop; night yards move to a much flatter asphalt loop.
- National team championships and individual world championships alternate by year.
- Twenty-four completed 4.167-mile yards equal 100 miles, but the race has no fixed endpoint.
About the Big Dog's Backyard Ultra
Big Dog's is the race that established the backyard format and remains its world championship stage. Championship years alternate: national teams compete simultaneously at satellite venues in even years, while the individual field returns to Bell Buckle in odd years. Team USA's 15-runner championship is held on the original Tennessee course, and each completed yard contributes one point to the team total as well as keeping the athlete alive in the race.
Course
Each yard is 4.167 miles, producing exactly 100 miles after 24 completed loops. At Bell Buckle, daylight yards use a trail loop with roughly 450 feet of climbing, while overnight yards switch to an asphalt loop with about 90 feet. The change creates two distinct pacing problems: conserve legs over the rolling trail, then manage repetitive pavement through the night. A new yard starts every hour and only the last runner to complete an extra solo yard wins.
Race-day weather
Mid-October in Middle Tennessee often begins cool and comfortable, but a race lasting several days can cross warm afternoons, cold predawn hours, rain, and humid trail conditions. The day and night course change also changes exposure. Runners and crews need layered clothing, dry footwear, and enough flexibility to adapt well beyond a normal one-day forecast.
