About the Apple Dumpling Day Marathon
The Elroy Lions Club has grown this festival race since 2007 and added the full marathon in 2013. Elroy sits where three converted rail trails meet, and the race leans on that network for a small-town September marathon where profits go to charity and finishers get an apple dumpling.
Course
From Schultz Park the course follows old railroad grades on Elroy's rail-trail network, including the 400 State Trail. The former rail beds keep the route level and much of it shaded, so the running is steady and flat rather than technical.
Race-day weather
Mid-September in western Wisconsin usually starts in the 50s and can climb toward the 70s. Shade takes the edge off sunny stretches, but leftover summer humidity can make the later miles feel warmer than the forecast.
