About the 7 Bridges Marathon
Chattanooga has two marathons and this is the older, smaller one. The field runs in the hundreds rather than the thousands, which cuts both ways: the bridges never bottleneck and the start is a short walk from Coolidge Park parking, but there are long stretches where nobody is going to pull you along. Support is disproportionate to the size, with 22 water stops and restrooms close to every mile, and the cutoff is loose enough that the race is a reasonable first marathon or a comeback race rather than a time-pressure event.
Course
The count in the name is literal. Four crossings are downtown bridges over the Tennessee River and three are on the North Chickamauga Creek Greenway north of the city, stitched together by riverfront path and city road. Surfaces move between asphalt, concrete, and several miles of boardwalk, and the boardwalk is the one section worth checking a forecast for because it turns slick in rain. The organizers describe the terrain as not hilly by East Tennessee standards but not flat either, which is fair: there is enough rise and fall to punish runners who chase pace instead of holding effort. The loop starts and finishes near the Chattanooga Theatre on Tremont Avenue by Coolidge Park.
Race-day weather
Late October is the good end of the Southeast calendar. Chattanooga highs slide from the upper 70s toward about 70 across the month and mornings can sit in the 40s, so an early start is usually cool and comfortable. Fog can hang in the river valley until the sun clears the ridges. Rain matters more than temperature here, less for how it feels than for what it does to the boardwalk footing.
