Quick facts
- Start and finish directly in front of Angkor Wat.
- Marathon runners must be 16 or older.
- Entries are non-refundable and cannot be transferred.
- Race packs are collected at Royal Angkor Resort in the days before the race.
Course
Runners gather in front of Angkor Wat, about 6 km from Siem Reap town, for a very early start. The route follows smooth roads past ancient temples, through national forest and beside village rice fields, with timing checkpoints at Angkor Thom, near Angkor Wat and, for the marathon, west of Banteay Samre. Water and electrolyte drinks come about every 2 km, some stations add bananas, and distance boards stand on the right side of the road.
Race-day weather
August falls in Cambodia's rainy season, so expect heat and high humidity even before sunrise, with a chance of a downpour. The early start helps, but drink at the frequent stations from the opening kilometers.
About the Angkor Empire Marathon
Cambodia Events, the organizer behind December's Angkor Wat International Half Marathon, stages this August race inside the Angkor World Heritage area. The day also includes a half marathon, a 10 km and a 3 km, and the race draws a large international field. The organizer presents the race as support for disabled people and children in need in Cambodia, and entry costs less for Cambodian residents than for foreign runners.
