Quick facts

  • Optional river crossing on the half marathon course, with a quarter mile dry detour.
  • Rugged rolling singletrack at Yankee Springs Recreation Area.
  • Noon start, unusually late even for a winter trail race.
  • Run and ruck divisions, with fields between roughly 100 and 200 finishers.

Course

Rugged singletrack with rolling hills through Yankee Springs, plus the river crossing the race is built around. Runners who want to stay dry can take a quarter mile detour instead. Snow, slush, ice and mud are all in play, sometimes in the same lap of conditions.

Race-day weather

Late February in west Michigan is cold and variable, with lake effect snow a real possibility. A wet river crossing in freezing air makes dry layers at the finish more important than usual.

About the Winter Trail Fest West Half Marathon

Held at Yankee Springs Recreation Area a week after the eastern edition near Brighton, this is the rougher of the two Michigan winter halves. Fields have run from 100 to nearly 200 finishers, and a noon start gives the temperature all morning to climb.
