Course
The course repeats the Williamsburg Bridge between Brooklyn and Manhattan, with a climb, descent and turnaround on each crossing. The bridge remains open to public traffic. Runners must stay out of the adjacent bike lane and provide their own water and fuel. Follow the edition-specific start and wave instructions; finishing depends on completing the announced bridge-lap target.
Race-day weather
New York summer nights can still be warm and humid at the start, and the exposed bridge offers little shelter from wind or rain. Repeating the climb makes the heat harder to manage than it would be on a flat route, especially because runners supply their own water. A longer draw can carry the race into cooler early-morning hours.
About the Williamsburg Bridge Marathon
Runners start without knowing how far they will go. One target, drawn between 10 and 100 miles, applies to the entire field and is announced after the race is underway. Solo runners and relays repeat the bridge crossings until they complete the announced distance. Entry is free, and results are submitted through Strava rather than chip timing.
The first edition in 2023 used a fixed marathon distance. Later editions introduced the random draw, making uncertainty part of the challenge as runners climb the same bridge repeatedly.
