Williamsburg Bridge Marathon
A free nighttime race repeats the open Williamsburg Bridge until a hidden 10-to-100-mile target is revealed, with no aid stations and plenty of climbing.
Quick facts
- The current distance formula is built around 32.5 miles and bounded from 10 to 100; one target applies to the whole field.
- Rolling waves begin at 8 p.m. from George B. Post Plaza on the Brooklyn side.
- No aid stations, bag drop, or event bathrooms; runners manage their own water, fuel, and stops.
- The bridge stays open to the public, and runners must remain out of the adjacent bike lane.
- Prize submissions require a public Strava activity with heart rate except for relays; completed laps override GPS mileage.
About the Williamsburg Bridge Marathon
Runners start without knowing how far they will go. One target applies to the entire field and is announced after the race is underway. The current formula is built around 32.5 miles, with a hard floor of 10 and ceiling of 100. Solo runners and relays keep crossing until they complete the announced lap count. Entry is free, and results are submitted through Strava rather than chip timing.
The first edition in 2023 used a fixed marathon distance. The random draw arrived in 2024 and produced 31.25 miles; the 2025 field drew 23.75 miles. The premise is funny until runners have spent several hours climbing the same bridge without knowing how many crossings remain.
Course
Runners gather at George B. Post Plaza on the Brooklyn side before rolling waves begin at 8 p.m. From there, the route is repeated Williamsburg Bridge crossings until the announced lap count is complete, with a sustained climb, descent, and tight turnaround on every length. The bridge stays open, so runners must remain out of the adjacent bike lane and expect normal public traffic. The draw determines the finishing side. There are no aid stations, bag drop, or event bathrooms.
Race-day weather
New York summer nights can still be warm and humid at the start, and the exposed bridge offers little shelter from wind or rain. Repeating the climb makes the heat harder to manage than it would be on a flat route, especially because runners supply their own water. A longer draw can carry the race into cooler early-morning hours.
