About the TCS New York City Marathon
The TCS New York City Marathon is the biggest marathon in the sport and maybe the easiest major to underestimate from a pacing standpoint. Entry is difficult, the field is huge, and the appeal goes well beyond time goals. It is as much a citywide event as a race, which is why runners keep treating it as a bucket-list marathon even when they know it is not flat.
Course
The course starts on Staten Island, crosses the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, moves through Brooklyn and Queens, climbs the Queensboro Bridge, then heads up First Avenue, into the Bronx, and back toward Central Park. The route is never brutally steep, but the bridges, rollers, and constant rhythm shifts make it much harder than the medal photos suggest.
Race-day weather
Early November usually gives New York cool racing weather, but wind matters on the bridges and the long avenues can feel more exposed than spectators remember. It often starts comfortable and gets tougher once the field thins out and the bridge climbs start to stack.
