About the Wellen Park Half Marathon
Five editions in, this has become a reliable winter option on Florida's Gulf Coast, with roughly 200 to 225 half marathon finishers a year. Strollers, walkers and leashed dogs are welcome, which tells you the tone even though the course is fast.
Course
Flat pavement through downtown Wellen Park and the surrounding lakeside development, starting and finishing at Solis Hall. There is nothing resembling a hill, so the variables are wind across open water and the shortage of shade once the sun is up.
Race-day weather
Late February in southwest Florida is close to ideal, often starting in the 50s and finishing in the low 70s. Humidity is low by Florida standards, but the exposed lakefront stretches carry wind.
