Course
The full marathon features more than 20 miles on the American Tobacco Trail and finishes at WakeMed Soccer Park. The race describes the course as fast and flat, with a downhill finish. It is not a pure road marathon, though. The official registration page notes unpaved surfaces and about five miles on road, so runners should expect a mixed-surface course rather than a typical city-street layout.
Race-day weather
The race is held in mid-March, and the official site describes the conditions as ideal temperatures averaging in the 40s and 50s Fahrenheit. That usually means a cooler start than later spring races in the region, but the second half can still feel different once the day warms up.
About the Tobacco Road Marathon
The Tobacco Road Marathon is a spring race in Cary, North Carolina with a strong reputation among runners chasing a Boston qualifier or a controlled PR attempt. It is a smaller, more focused race day than a major city marathon, which is part of the appeal for runners who want a fast course without much noise around it.
