About the Last Desert (Antarctica)
The Last Desert is the Antarctic round of the 4 Deserts series and admits only runners who have completed at least two other RacingThePlanet ultramarathons. Competitors sail from Ushuaia and race from expedition-ship landings when conditions permit. It is a small, logistically complex field rather than an open mass-participation ultra.
Course
Up to six timed stages are set on circuits of roughly 2 to 14 km at different Antarctic landing sites. Runners cover as much ground as possible during each stage, and the combined distance determines the standings. Total distance varies widely and can range from about 50 km to roughly 250 km because weather, ice, permits, and safe landing windows control where and how long the field can race.
