About the Surf City Half Marathon

The Surf City Half Marathon is the most popular distance in a large Southern California race weekend. It works for newer half marathoners because of its generous limit, while faster runners get a straightforward coastal road course. The main tradeoff is exposure: ocean scenery comes with wind, sun, and little shelter.

Course

The half runs north on Pacific Coast Highway past Huntington Beach Pier toward the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, then returns to an oceanfront finish. The profile is flat and easy to read. Headwinds and dense opening packs are more likely to cost time than hills.

Race-day weather

Coastal February mornings are usually cool to mild, but the temperature can change quickly once the sun clears the marine layer. Wind direction along the out-and-back is the key pacing factor. Sunglasses and early fluids help if the return leg turns bright and exposed.
