About the Sky Island Trail Race
The Davis Mountains are one of only three sky islands in Texas, a cooler, greener range surrounded by desert, and this Trail Roots race has used them as its home since 2018. It is a small-field trail weekend based at Davis Mountains State Park and Prude Ranch, far from any big city, and the remote West Texas setting is a large part of the draw.
Course
The 50K climbs rugged trail through desert scrub into high pines, stacking about 3,900 feet of gain with stream crossings and long views toward historic Fort Davis and the McDonald Observatory. All of it sits around a mile of elevation, which makes climbs feel harder than the profile suggests. A 25K and a 10 mile run shorter versions of the same terrain.
Race-day weather
Late September in the high desert usually means cool mornings in the 50s, warm afternoons, and strong sun with very dry air. Hydration and sun protection matter more than heat itself, and the altitude thins the margin for going out too hard.
