About the Hixon 50
River City Running Club's fall trail weekend in Hixon Forest treats the 50K as its flagship, with a 25K sharing the Sunday morning and shorter trail runs the day before. For a club race, the climbing total is closer to a mountain ultra than a Midwest cruiser.
Course
The 50K runs two 25K loops that are almost entirely singletrack, each with about 4,000 feet of elevation change and bluff-top sections that open onto Mississippi River Valley views. The last 500-foot climb is timed on its own, with prizes for the fastest ascents.
Race-day weather
Late October in western Wisconsin usually means starts in the 30s and highs in the 50s. Wet leaves hide roots and rocks on the descents, and wind is noticeably stronger on the exposed bluff tops than in the forest below.
