Sheep Mountain 50 Mile

Few ultras in the country stay as high as this one. The Human Potential Running Series race lives on the mountains along the western edge of the South Park valley, with an average elevation over 10,600 feet that puts the 50 mile behind only a handful of American races for sustained altitude. A 50K and a half marathon share the day, and the whole event is capped at 300 runners, so it keeps a small-field mountain character.

The route starts and finishes at Fairplay Beach and climbs into a mix of technical singletrack, remote forest service fire roads, and flowing dirt county roads. The 50 mile runs about 53 miles with roughly 9,600 feet of climbing, and mid-pack finishers usually need 13 to 15 hours of the 16-hour limit. Runners in the two ultra distances can drop down mid-race if the day goes sideways.

Early August at 10,000-plus feet usually means a start near freezing, strong sun through midday, and a real chance of afternoon thunderstorms rolling across South Park. The altitude dries runners out faster than the temperatures suggest, so fluids and layers both matter.
