About the Ocean Running Club's Seaside Half Marathon
A local running club has kept this Jersey Shore half small on purpose. Entry is open, but the half caps at 600 runners and closes once that fills, which keeps the field closer to a club race than a fall destination half. Most of the entrants come from New Jersey and the New York metro area, and the same weekend carries a 5K and an optional back-to-back combo of the two.
Course
Two loops from the Sawmill Cafe on the Seaside Park boardwalk, mixing boardwalk planks with paved barrier island streets toward Island Beach State Park. It is flat enough to run even splits, so the variables are wind off the Atlantic and how much energy the first loop costs. The cutoff is layered: the opening loop has to be finished in 1 hour 30 minutes, with 3 hours for the full distance.
Race-day weather
Early October at the shore usually means a cool start in the 50s warming into the 60s, with humidity mostly gone. The exposed boardwalk and beachfront stretches offer no shade and no wind protection, so a stiff ocean breeze can cost more time than the temperature does.
