About the Sahara Marathon

Created as both a sporting event and an act of solidarity, the Sahara Marathon brings international runners into the Saharawi refugee camps for a week centered on local families and community projects.

Course

Marathon runners start in El Aaiun camp, cross Auserd and finish in Smara. Most footing is firm and stony, with sandy stretches, desert exposure and aid stations spaced roughly every three kilometers.

Race-day weather

March days near Tindouf are typically springlike at about 25 C, while nights can fall near 10 C. Strong wind, dust or a sirocco can alter conditions quickly across the exposed desert.
