About the Run Sunset Beach Half Marathon
Coastal Race Productions built this April race around a barrier island most runners have never raced on, and it has grown into the biggest half on the southern North Carolina coast. Entries open a full year ahead at a steep discount, which is why the field is largely set long before race week.
Course
The half starts at the mainland waterfront park, works through golf course neighborhoods and around the Sunset Beach mainland, then climbs the intracoastal waterway bridge, about 65 feet of gain, and runs the island end to end before returning to the park to finish. Roads are only partly closed, so the field spreads out early. The route carries USATF certification NC22001BDS.
Race-day weather
Mid April mornings here typically start near 60 degrees for the early gun and reach the upper 60s by late finishers. Sun is rarely the problem; wind off the waterway on the bridge and along the exposed island stretch is what changes pacing.
