Run Crazy Horse Marathon

Very few marathons begin inside a monument. This one does, and the opening miles loop out to the bus turnaround at the base of the carving before the field ever reaches a trail. The scale of the race does not match the scale of the setting: the combined entry list for the full, the half and the five-person relay still lands in the hundreds, and the whole operation is shuttles out of Hill City in the dark and a finish chute on Main Street. Online entry stays open into late September, mailed paper forms are still accepted for five dollars more, and refunds do not exist here, nor do transfers to another runner. Distance switches close a month out. Runners must be 14 or older to enter the marathon.

Three miles of paved and gravel road inside Crazy Horse Memorial come first, past the old schoolhouse and out to the turnaround below the mountain. From there the route is the George S. Mickelson Trail, a crushed-limestone rail conversion whose grade rarely exceeds four percent, and it runs south to a turnaround near Custer before doubling back. Around mile 16 the race stops repeating itself and commits to the long descent into Hill City. The organizers' chart puts the start at 5,919 feet, the high point at 6,083, and total climbing at 719 feet, and almost all of that climbing lands in the six miles between the Custer turnaround and the top of the final drop. USATF course SD24001MAB records a net loss of about 975 feet. Boston only adjusts finishing times once a course gives back 1,500 feet or more, so a qualifier off this one needs no asterisk. Trail width sets the rules: no dogs, no strollers, no bikes, and passing on the gravel takes intent.

Organizers tell entrants to expect 40s at the 8 a.m. gun and high 60s by the time the last finishers reach Main Street, which is a fair read on early October in the southern Black Hills. Thin dry air does more damage than the thermometer. Sweat evaporates before you notice it, thirst lags well behind actual fluid loss, and the sun at a mile of elevation burns harder than the temperature implies. Ponderosa pine shades long stretches of the trail and then abruptly does not, and an overnight freeze or a first dusting of snow is a normal October outcome up here.
