About the PT281 Ultramarathon
PT281 is a long point-to-point test across inland Portugal. The race begins in Belmonte and finishes in Proenca-a-Nova after crossing quiet parts of Beira Baixa where runners can spend hours alone. Navigation skill and self-sufficiency matter as much as conventional trail speed.
Course
The linear route mixes forest tracks, rural paths, dirt roads and paved sections from Belmonte to Proenca-a-Nova. It is not continuously marked, so runners navigate by GPS and manage long gaps with limited outside assistance. The race allows 66 hours for the 281K crossing.
Race-day weather
Heat is the defining condition. Inland Beira Baixa can exceed 40 C in July, with low humidity, direct sun and little shade across exposed sections. Managing water, cooling and effort through multiple days is central to finishing.
