Pilot Mountain to Hanging Rock Ultra

The 50 miler links two of North Carolina's signature state parks in a single push across the Sauratown Mountains, and entry sells out well ahead of race day most years. A 50K and a 50 mile relay share the same September morning, all finishing below Hanging Rock in Danbury.

The point to point route leaves Pinnacle near Pilot Mountain at dawn and works across the Sauratown range to the finish at Hanging Rock. Expect sustained climbs, technical singletrack, and connector sections, with cutoff points on course and a final 8 p.m. cutoff that keeps the 50 miler honest.

Mid September in the North Carolina Piedmont usually means a humid start in the 60s with afternoons that can push toward 80. The wooded climbs hold shade, but the exposed connector stretches can feel warm once the field is deep into the afternoon.
