What to know about the Palermo Marathon
The Palermo Marathon (Maratona di Palermo) is a city race that leans hard into the slogan “per…corriamo l’arte”, inviting runners to literally run through art and history. The event has grown into one of southern Italy’s key marathons, pairing a FIDAL-certified, Boston-qualifying course with a relaxed Sicilian race weekend. On the start line you will find a mix of local clubs, visiting Italian runners and a growing international field, all gathering on Via della Libertà near Piazza Ruggero Settimo. Away from the race itself, Palermo offers a dense concentration of architecture, markets and food, so it is easy to turn marathon day into the centrepiece of a longer Sicilian escape.
Palermo Marathon course description
The course uses two almost identical 21K loops that blend city streets, green parkland and coastal stretches. From the start area close to Teatro Politeama the route works its way past Teatro Massimo, the Quattro Canti crossroads and Palermo Cathedral, then out toward Parco della Favorita and the Monte Pellegrino foothills before swinging back toward the seafront. Runners pass landmarks such as the Palazzina Cinese and Villa Niscemi and then re-enter the centre along wide boulevards before closing each loop near Via della Libertà. The profile is gently rolling rather than flat, with a few longer false flats and turns, but there are no extreme climbs.
Typical weather conditions for the Palermo Marathon
Palermo’s Mediterranean climate usually delivers very friendly marathon conditions in mid November. Early-morning start temperatures are often in the 12–15°C (mid 50s°F) range and can rise to around 18–20°C (mid 60s°F) under sunshine, cooled by sea breezes along the waterfront sections. Rain showers are possible but prolonged cold is rare, so most runners are comfortable in light race kit with maybe arm warmers for the opening kilometres.
